Columbia River Sunset

oil on linen
This is a scene of the Columbia River at sunset near my place in Northport Washington where I have almost twenty acres, complete with cabin! Northport is a small town of about 360 people and is the northern most port along the Columbia before you get to the Canadian border, which is eight miles to the north. It always reminds me of the Pete Seeger song "Roll On Columbia, Roll On". I don't think there exists a more peaceful place on earth. I would like to conduct a plein air workshop up there sometime this year, so if anyone is interested! let me know!!

Without Winter

Winter comes.
We go inside to be
by the fire,
to thaw out cold
and aching fingers,
to hang our socks
on the fireplace
to dry,
and sip soup
from a large cup.
These are the things
I love about winter.
These are the things
that would not exist
without winter.
I remember a time
standing by the gate
to the upper pasture.
Horizontal snow
and the day's light
almost gone.
Cold silence fills
the air around me
And I have never
felt more alive.
These are the things
I love about winter.
These are the things
that would not exist
without Winter.

Shortcuts

There are no shortcuts through life.
At times I feel like I'm being tossed around in rushing water, not knowing where I am heading, but feeling alive because of the peril I am in.

Winter Morn

Today is another wintery morning in the high country. This is a painting I did awhile ago but it reminds me of today, before dawn and a day full of potential to be the best day of my life! We never know what each day will bring. We can only bring our best to each day.
