Another painting of Whiteout heading to the Sangre de Cristo Invitational of Colorado the first of 2014. The landscape of the Sand Wash Basin is quite varied, from sage and pinon tree spotted slopes to high bluffs and canyons. It provides the wild horses that inhabit the area plenty of natural terrain to keep them healthy, hooves trimmed and muscles toned.

Life is always interesting and defined only by the attitude you take towards what you find around the next bend. My life has taken a detour I never saw coming but it has afforded me many rewards I would never have garnered without this change of direction. On September 12, 2013 the rains continued to come down as I watched from the front porch of my log home nestled in a shallow valley part way up Storm Mountain. On the news I heard that Hwy 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon had been compromised at mm 74 and then later at mm 82. The canyon was closed. I then saw a video of CR 43 just above the Storm Mountain access bridge posted on facebook. The bridge above was being overtaken by rushing waters from the North Fork of the Big Thompson and it appeared it was only a matter of time before our bridge would suffer the same fate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK7QfEbbZOM We were marooned on the mountain.

September 13, Friday the 13th (which is the only reason I can remember these dates), I was awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of water rushing, a river. There is no river up here. Still hearing it when I went out to feed the horses in the morning and determining it was coming from over by the pond not far away I decided to take a walk in the rain. This is what I found, a normally small trickle of water heading to the pond had turned into a six foot wide stream and a three to four foot high waterfall and the pond finding it's way up the road.
The phones and internet were out by now. Having previously arranged to meet my friend Georgia at her house, for a reason I can't recall, and being unable to call I just went up to her house. We decided to do a walkabout. There were people gathered close to the "T" where land for the new fire station was just being prepared. Everyone was trying to gather information so Georgia and I decided to head up towards Palisade Mountain which would give us a good overlook into the canyon. It was only the beginning of what we were to discover.

There were people on the mountain who had been vacationing who needed to get off, people with medical issues, medicines that needed to be replenished, food and other essentials needed as well as people stranded OFF the mountain needing/wanting to get back up to family and/or pets. People in need of things and people with things they could share. The fire department swung into motion and being a former member I was honored to be asked to help. The efforts of ALL on the mountain to organize and begin fixing our road and creating another road to gain access both ways to the mountain was truly amazing. It has given me renewed faith in the true nature of Americans.

After the first week I realized I had to get off the mountain in order to make a living myself which also meant evacuating my two dogs and two horses. The sound of huge Chinook helicopters landing and taking off became commonplace. I knew I couldn't get my horses and dogs off together so my mission became to find someone to take my two dogs off on a helicopter. I brought them to the landing zone and simply hung out for most of the day 'til Karen, the PIO for the fire department, came up to me and said she had a young couple who had no pets of their own and were willing to take my guys off for me. An almost surreal recollection with the din of the Chinook and the wind from the blades the young man stooping down to take the leash of Kaya said, "My favorite breed of dog, somebody else's" with a broad smile that just exuded confidence and care. I knew they would be alright. My sister later found this video that just happened to be being shot when Kaya and Nakai were evacuated.
Nakai at 29 sec and Kaya at 34 sec. Pretty much the only close ups in the whole clip!

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200704125101869&l=8420681168518807978

My sister would later pick them up at the Larimer County Humane Shelter. All of this at no charge . . . people helping people, and animals. I was struck by the guidelines for evacuation. You could only take one bag or backpack per person, but you could have unlimited numbers of animals go with you! An example of having your priorities straight! I saw numerous dogs, cats, bunnies etc. and even a cage with chickens in it, load onto the Big Birds! To my knowledge there were very few animals that simply couldn't handle getting into this huge, loud, flying cave that would safely take them off the mountain, a testament to their trusting nature.

Okay, dogs taken care of, now for myself and the horses. Now for those of you who are unfamiliar with my two equines, one is Blue, a blue roan foxtrotter about 15 years old, and Lightfoot, 35 years young with no back teeth and whose senior feed needs to be soaked in water in order for him to be able to eat it. He chews on hay but then spits it out. I call them his "cuds".

Besides his eating considerations he has been a bit wobbly this past year or so, so my concerns about him being able to trail off the mountain were deeply on my mind. Initially the road of choice off the mountain was the Bear Gulch road, of questionable length (I'd heard anywhere from 10 to 15 miles) and nefarious condition (crews eventually abandoned fixing this route for evacuation). With this knowledge I didn't think Lightfoot would be able to make it down . . . my only option was to put him down on the mountain before I left. I resisted this idea (along with many tears) long enough for the Bobcat Ridge road to open up as an option. I decided Lightfoot deserved a chance and this route was only seven and a half miles long. I found several other people who were riding their horses down and John Whiteside whom I had bought my hay from (which by the way was still down in Loveland and dry!) had offered to pick us up at our destination point and trailer us to The Ranch where the boys would stay until I could find a more permanent place for them. I've always been good at compartmentalizing my life and not worrying about things until I have to, reminding me of Scarlett O'Hara in a way as she said "I'll think about that tomorrow". I'm satisfied dealing with one problem at a time. I find worrying about many things at once is simply too daunting and when I feel overwhelmed I shut down. I believe this why it's best we don't see into our future. I'm afraid if I had seen into the next two months I would have felt worn out from the get go instead of energized by overcoming the next obstacle.

My focus then became to prepare for the trip down. I rode Blue and ponied Lightfoot a couple times to assure we didn't have any issues with that and make sure I thought Lightfoot had a good chance of making the trip. I then prepared Blue to carry my saddlebags and bedroll. We're talking about a horse who when I got him a few years before was afraid to have someone walk up to him with a saddle blanket and anything that looked or sounded like plastic was a gigantic boogey man! I was so glad I'd worked with him on these issues and with our relationship. If you're a horse person check out Carolyn Resnick's method of working with horses which she discovered as a child watching and interacting with wild mustangs. Her book "Naked Liberty" is a great read!
He was NOT going to tolerate that! And with no time to work on it the laptop had to stay home. I actually had great fun figuring out how to get my most important things loaded, i.e. my paints, brushes and canvas. Paints and brushes were easy, but how to get my beloved Claussens#13 rolled linen down? Hmmm . . . I took a handsaw and cut my 84" roll at about 24 inches then rolled the remaining canvas, cut in 24" increments, around this, stuffed the center with paints and rolled the whole thing up in my Aussie duster along with a few clothes! Voila! My bedroll. The camera was then safely packed as I've had experience breaking a camera on a trail ride trying to take pics and I didn't need anymore problems. So unfortunately there are no enroute pictures. Every decision was an exercise in priorities. It's a matter of distilling down what is really important and what really isn't.
The trip only took about three hours (I kept humming the theme song to Gilligan's Island "a three hour tour", but alas, it really was only three hours, well actually about four if you count riding to our starting point :)). The boys at Bobcat Ridge. I truly wish I'd taken the time to take more pictures but at the moment that was the least of my concerns.

John Whiteside of Whiteside Western Wear in Loveland (I'll give him a plug here) came and picked us up and transported the boys to The Ranch and me to one of my new homes, my studio in Loveland. The boys would stay at the Ranch until I could find a more permanent home, I just needed to come feed them twice a day. That was when I got my firsthand view of the devastation that had happened down in the valley!!! Piles and piles of debri and ruined possessions lined the roads that were mostly blocked off. I felt lucky, I had only been inconvenienced. These people by all appearances had lost their homes, or close to it.

My sister who had retrieved my dogs from the shelter drove up from Arvada to pick me up then loaned me her vehicle to drive back and forth to the Ranch to feed the boys for a few days until another friend loaned me another vehicle for the duration. I enjoyed painting this and hope to do more in the Wild Horses of Pilot Butte series soon. I'll post them here when they are done. These horses are so iconic of what we imagine a wild mustang to be like, rugged looking, a bit coarse, perhaps on the small side but robust and muscular. So beautiful!

I've started another mustang painting, this one from my swing through the Wild Horse Scenic Loop outside of Rock Springs this summer. This beautiful boy was one of two bachelor stallions I saw, my favorite bay roan color.

I may still move the butte over a fraction to the right. The withers/neck insertion may need to be lowered as well. My next chore will be to design the brush in the foreground. That will help decide whether I need to move the butte a fraction to the right for balance. It all has to work together . . . Stay tuned!

Thought I would post today's plein air. I traveled not far up the north fork of the Big Thompson towards Glen Haven. The sun was in and out, but mostly out. I can see some compositional problems already (why can't I see those out in the field?); the tangent of the water and the lower rocks, also the bottom rocks don't read correctly but this is what it looks like straight out of the field, no touchups. I was fairly satisfied with my color and values today. Been trying to continue the momentum from painting in the Tetons this past month with painting outdoors or at least from life nearly every day. There is really no teacher better than simply getting out there and painting!

Needless to say, this was a fantastic trip!! Painting bison from life, landscapes and seeing some of the most incredible animals!! Including seeing this grizzly sow and her three, count them, three (one is just behind her on the other side) cubs!! Stopped at the "bear jam" standing in the back of my truck waiting for her to show her face a guy drives his big two story RV right in front of us and parks obscuring any hope of a view. Looking disgruntled at him and he like "huh?", he asks if we wanted him to move. ? Really? Just then the sow comes out and everyone goes bonkers. This guy says, do you want to climb up on my RV for a better look? Yes! So I climb up and was able to get a ton of shots!! Things work out . . .

Then off in the distance I saw this handsome couple, pulled over and decided to hike out to get a closer look. Moving to the rear of the bay I knew she would turn to face me so I could get a better look at both of them,

My latest deer painting. I love happening onto one or more doe just as the morning sun is reaching the meadows on the mountain. They have a delicate, cautious way of stepping as they move through the tall grasses, drawn to finding out who you are they step closer and closer, curiosity trumping fear. I'm glad to know I don't resemble a predator. I've also learned that if you hold completely still they will approach. I move only when their attention is elsewhere. In this way I have been able to get quite close to them! The click of the camera doesn't seem to bother them as they perceive no movement.

My latest piece is reminiscent of those hot days of summer from years past, from a trip I took many years ago to the Taos Pueblo. This is a typical pueblo dog trying to find respite from the hot summer sun under a native pergola. The warm colors enhance the feeling of heat.

Seems my Tuesday class has been on a still life roll! I think we're all enjoying it and since I've been on a painting from life bent lately this direction has fit right in! My shows are all done and I now get to paint what I want for awhile. This is the time I enjoy experimenting with new ideas and revisiting old ones. Many years ago I would travel from my home outside of Denver to Loveland to paint with the wonderful artist Lu Haskew. She has since passed on but she was a wonderful mentor and friend and was always thinking of the next painting before she had finished the one she was on. She painted six days a week 'til she was almost 90 years old! Spring was always flower painting time and you could tell the time of year by which flowers we were painting. This painting reminds me of her, roses, ribbon, and flow blue.

Wow! What a great three days of painting and horses!! The weather wasn't exactly cooperative but we were able to adjust thanks to Ann Delzell and her neighbor Juliene and his beautiful appaloosa horses, not to mention his indoor arena keeping us out of the rain. Thursday morning we studied anatomy and drew from photos then in the afternoon we went to Juliene's. It was pouring rain outside but we were nice and dry in the arena. Our extremely handsome model was Captain Kirk! And he seemed to love all the attention the ladies bestowed on him. We were able to examine up close the skeletal structure and musclulature noting particular points to look for when painting.
The next two days everyone worked hard on their own paintings from photos assisted by their experience with the Captain.
Judging by the quality of work produced I'm convinced of the amazing power touch has on the memory! I sidtracked into the realm of composition a little also. There was such a good response to this that I'm planning a mini workshop in the near future on the subject. July 4, 2012. Walking the hills of Sandwash Basin, this bay stallion and his two mares, one with her foal in tow, were browsing in amongst the sage. As I stood on a small hill, they worked their way towards me, glancing occasionally in my direction but not worried about my presence. Reaching within about fifty feet of my position they stopped for an afternoon siesta, as if to welcome me to the fold and letting me know I was accepted on the range they call home. There they dozed for an hour or more, wind whistling over the barren landscape, through mustang manes and my mind. This painting depicts a moment they were approaching my position and the stallion, Femur, raised his head giving me a glance before resuming his high noon grazing. Such beautiful, strong, and powerful animals, yet wise and sentient at the same time. Hence the title "Sage".

This is a painting of Vogue and one of her brothers, both members of Cosmos' or Kiowa's band, I'm not sure who is the leader. I've heard both refered to as the leader. The wild horse band heirarchy is quite interesting. There can be a lead stallion and a dominant stallion both in the same band. Kiowa, most probably Vogue's daddy due to similar coloring, was the meet and greet stallion. When another band approached Kiowa was the one to go out and do the posturing, striking, rearing and poop pile sniffing, and adding to ( a curious thing, similar to dogs urinating to establish territory). Cosmos seemed to be the disciplinarian, chasing the little sorrel in my painting here with snaked neck all around the watering hole, only to be stopped by Kiowa resulting in a bit of rearing and striking. Quite the display!

Working on using greys. This is Kinstry, a mare in Femur's band, from my visit last summer to the Sand Wash Basin HMA, outside of Maybell, CO. She had a foal when I was there and I plan to do a painting of her and her foal, Sunka Wakan sometime soon. The Sand Wash area is pretty arid and I wanted to capture the feeling of the dry air and the sage colors and knew this would be a great way to practice mixing harmonious greys. Not to mention wanting to paint this fabulous mare! It's a possible contender to be in the Governor's Show this April.
This is one of four paintings I will have at the Colorado Governor's Show, Loveland, CO, opening in late April. I was plein air painting outside Jackson Hole Wyoming overlooking the Gros Ventre River last summer during the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters annual event, as an osprey circled above, ascending higher and higher into the clouds and blue sky, until finally disappearing into the vastness that is his home. What would take me an hour to travel he covered in minutes, silently and with grace. I think that's one of the reasons I love painting birds, there is a grace about them, an honesty in their existence that transcends anything of which we as humans are capable.

February 28 through March 2nd I conducted a workshop on painting birds at my studio in Loveland, CO. It was an incredible group of talented artists who worked hard and worked ME hard! Above is a demo I did illustrating penumbra and how to paint iridescence. We concentrated on making deliberate, thoughtful and expressive brushstrokes with attention to edges. They blew me away with the quality of their work!!

"Gathering the Mares"

18x24

Another painting from my first Sandwash Basin adventure to view the wild mustangs. This stallion is Cosmos, gathering a few mares after their afternoon siesta. He is a beautiful white stallion hooked up with Kiowa, a dark bay paint stallion. They seem to share custody of this band, I'm not sure who is the lead stallion and who is the dominant. I suspect Kiowa is the lead stallion as he was the one to do the meet and greet posturing, squeeling and striking when another stallion approached. Cosmos was the stallion who came first, even before the lead mare, down to the water hole. These bands are ever changing as stallions steal mares from other stallions and the young bachelor stallions are forever attempting to get mares of their own. Quite a bit of drama going on, their own version of soap operas I suppose. This painting headed to Arts at Denver www.artsatdenver.com for their "Irresistable" show in February. Hence the working title for this piece has been "Mr. Irresistable".

Look for more in the mustang series at the Greeley Stampede Invitational Art Show beginning June 28, 2013, Island Grove Arena, Greeley, Colorado, www.greeleystampede.org as well as the Governor's Show, Loveland Museum, Loveland, CO, opening gala April 27, 2013, www.governorsartshow.org .

This is a painting of a few of the wild mustang mares in Kiowa's band, at the Sandwash Basin HMA, May 2012. The little paint looks pregnant. I don't know her name or if she in fact foaled later in the summer. What a treat it was to watch them come in and drink!!

Update: Dec 28, 2012

I have found out that the bay paint mare in the middle's name is Vogue. She didn't foal this past year but has a sorrel two year old filly, Gem, with whom she maintains a close bond. There is a helicopter round up scheduled for fall of 2013 at Sandwash Basin. If you're not aware of how brutal these roundups can be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=Vw8iX7LO8g0&NR=1 . I hope that all these magnificent horses survive.

It was so much fun to gather my reference material for this project. The girl with the bike is Jordan, the granddaughter of a friend. The other two were strangers whose parents were gracious enough to let me photograph them. What a fun way to spend time, watching children do what they do best, be children.

The other three commissions were for private parties.

As they say though, there is no rest for the weary. I have the Western Show at Abend Gallery, Denver, CO in January, a private show in Boulder. CO in February, Representing the West at the Sangre de Cristo Art Center in Pueblo, CO in March and The Governor's Show in Loveland, CO in April. What a wonderful problem to have!!

This is my latest painting from the mustangs of the Sand Wash Basin herd, Outlaw. Outlaw is somewhat of an vagabond, attaching himself to various different bands as the mood suits him. I am especially attached to this particular stallion as the very first horse I ever fell in love with was a little blue roan mare named Outlaw, and this Outlaw is colored like my daugher's little mare, Chinook, whom we lost several years back. Even before I knew his name he stole my heart, for I first laid eyes on him as he came up beside me, not more than twenty yards to my right, as my attention had been on another stallion. I turned, and there he was, facing down a stallion named Femur, and I witnessed my very first wild stallion encounter. Not too much mind you, some squeeling and striking, but I was thrilled beyond believablity! It was as if there were no humans around. They were totally oblivious to our presence.

Whew! Just got back from ten days in Jackson Hole Wyoming plein air painting with the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters. It was a wonderful, hard working week and the show at the end was incredible, as always. I'm posting some rather bad photos unfortunately, which I took in front of my cabin at the Murie Center (an incredible story in itself of conservation and living truly with the land). "Morning Solace" sold at the opening, going to a wonderful woman living outside Jackson.
My last morning painting I found this stand of aspen trees on Wilson Rd. The majesty of this stand is what first attracted me to the scene, it's distant mountains and trees giving depth to the vertical format. The shape and color of the cast shadow was another intriguing aspect of the scene. The title came from the sense of peace and contentment I felt at the culmination of a wonderful week spent painting this amazing area.

This was painted at the Cunningham cabin. My intent was to capture the scene that Mrs. Cunningham may have seen each day as she went about her daily chores. This was done in the evening, so perhaps it was what she saw at the end of a hard day, content with the results of her labor, knowing this country was truly God's creation.

As I was engrossed in doing this painting I vaguely heard from behind, some grunting. It finally dawned on me it was the sound of buffalo. Turning around I discovered a herd of about fifty buffalo were coming through the aspen tree grove where I was painting. As they came closer I grabbed my pochade box on tripod and retreated to my truck about a hundred feet away. This proceedure repeated itself three more times during the course of the painting. Needless to say I got some great shots of buffalo in amongst the aspen trees for later paintings. Finishing this piece I then followed the buffalo to the adjoining field where I then did the next painting . . .

They stood relatively still as the calf nursed and when they moved on I noticed another pair in pretty much the same position, the light being slightly different, but I could use them to finish the painting. The third bison was added from another dozing in the field. I did several of these plein air paintings of buffalo, each with their own story about trying to stay out of their way while still getting the painting done. Note to self, one must always be looking behind oneself for more approaching bison.

This painting was done on Elkhead Island. The husband of my friend and fellow painter Ruth Rawhouser brought his boat up for the day and took several of us across Jackson Lake to Elkhead Island where we enjoyed painting the park from a little different perspective. Facing east, I didn't notice the storm brewing in the west, almost totally obscuring Mt. Moran until Mack came motoring up politely suggesting we wrap it up. Traveling back in the rain and hoping to beat the lightening we had a great time none the less and enjoyed lunch on the dock in the rain.
