"Berries"

14x18 oil on stretched linen
$1800

This is a young grizzly bear enjoying a berry snack. I love the cinnamon color of some bears! This guy was quite the character and very focused on his treat.

The Coming of Autumn

There's something about September and the brisk morning air that draws me to paint buffalo.  Perhaps it's the  the sound and sight of tall, drying blades of yellow grass, waving in unison as the wind passes over them, or the changing sound of aspen leaves, flickering in the sun, foretelling of something to come. . . as if it were a mystery. The only mystery of course is when and for how long will the next season last.  Fall is a season of preparation and change.  So as I stock up on firewood and watch the horses blowing their summer coats and "hairing up" for winter, there is a sense of excitement and anticipation as everything in the wild world gets ready for winter.
"Prairie Peace"
8x10

"On the Prod"
8x8

"Prairie Son"
12x12

The top two paintings went to the "Artist's Gathering Show" at the Chico Basin Ranch this past Labor Day weekend and will travel to their show in Denver later this month.

The bottom painting is still at the studio awaiting it's frame and varnish.

"Spring's Dawning"

11.5"x12"  oil on canvas
sold

This little yearling doe was just at the base of Storm Mountain Road.  She was so curious and started to come toward me as I got out of my truck to take a few pictures.  The innocence of animals, especially the young, is inspiring.

Above are my new works at Arts at Denver for their 20th Anniversary Show. Hard to believe, but I've been with Paula since the beginning of my career and her gallery!! It began in an old church up in Silver Plume. Ah, the good ol' days! Standing around the huge potbelly stove at openings, sitting out on the front steps of the church, not to mention going up there to paint. It was grand! Thanks for taking a chance on me so many years ago Paula!!

Swainson's Watch

15x15 oil on canvas mounted on gatorboard.
$1800 framed

This painting began as a demo, put on the back shelf for awhile 'til I finally finished it last week. This is a female Swainson's Hawk that was rescued by the Raptor Foundation in Ft. Collins, CO. They do a tremendous job taking care of these birds, keeping them as wild as possible and returning those who are able back to their native skies.

"Good Morning, Good Morning"

24x20 oil on stretched canvas
$2800
The soft colors and gesture of this guy sitting on an old fashioned light post were so intriguing, he looking quizically at the strange two legged holding a little black box up to her eye. The line of a Beatles' song kept going through my head, "good morning, good morning".

My favorite roadside companion. If you look you will see them everywhere perched on power lines and bare branches or hovering ever so deftly surveying the ground for potential meals. The male is very colorful with his rust and blue plummage.

Preening - Western Bluebird

SOLD
12x12 oil on board
In the "Small Gems" show at Saks Gallery in Denver this December.
Longtime no post, but I have been busy with painting for various upcoming shows, of which this little guy will be in one. I have been reading about Chinese art and realized that the simplicity I strive for in my work is akin to that simplicity found in Chinese art, each stroke having it's own intent of expression, simplicity of background and linear perspective. Hmmm . . . this requires further thought and reading.
